Heel ulcers can occur if you’re older in age, diabetic or have peripheral neuropathy.  Although they can arise for other reasons they do represent a very serious problem that if not treated or properly prevented can represent a very significant risk to your limb.  Severe heel ulcers have been known to result in amputations.

But what to do about it?  Clearly prevention is the key.

Thankfully there are some very low cost preventative solutions that can be simply purchased and used.

If you already have an ulcer you should already be under a physician’s guidance. Do not attempt to self treat the ulcer. However, many of the preventative solutions can be used to lessen the pain and facilitate healing.  Again, with your doctor’s approval.

That said there are so many heel protectors out there that it can be daunting at first to find the best one.  Our rankings should help with that.

Top 3 Heel Protector Reviews

DMI Leg Elevation Pillow

The circular design of this leg pillow has both good and bad qualities.  It directly attaches to the leg so you don’t lose the heel protection as you move around during sleep.  The circular shape allows you to turn naturally without encountering frustrating resistance.  The big drawback is that for larger or thicker legs it can feel tight and uncomfortable.

Another major feature is that it protects the heel without having any direct contact with the heel.  Moreover it keeps the heel off the bed completely removing any and all pressure to the heel itself.

GERIHEEL Heel Flotation

The GeriHeel is another fantastic device.  It eliminates the need to attach to the leg by simply being wide.  Simple but effective.

It protects the heel without ever making contact with the heel itself and it floats the heel off the bed to provide truly pressureless protection.

Prevalon® Heel Protector I

This heel protector attaches to the leg itself and therefore moves with the leg as it moves.  Similar to the other products reviewed, the pillow like material lifts and elevates the heel.  Unlike the other proceeding two products this protector actually makes content with the heel itself.
